You think you have a marketing problem, but I've been watching photographers spin their wheels for years convinced the answer is a better hook, a different strategy, one more course.

In this solo episode recorded live from my hotel room at Reset Conference in Chattanooga, I break down what's actually going on under the surface.

What's covered in this episode:

  • Why your messaging will never outperform your identity, no matter how good your strategy is
  • The neurological reason you keep defaulting to the same patterns even when you know better
  • The three-part framework behind magnetic messaging: identity, energy, and language, and why most people start with the wrong one
  • What Renee presented at Reset Conference and how to apply it to your own business right now
  • The real question you need to ask yourself before you write another caption
  • Why comparing yourself to other photographers is costing you more than you realize
  • How to know if you're dealing with an identity problem vs. a strategy problem

Hotel Room Setup And Sound Note

SPEAKER_00

Hey, hey, welcome back to Tried and Tree with the Dash of Woo. I took last week off because I was at Reset Conference, but I did record an episode for you guys from the hotel room. And so that is what you're about to watch or listen to. Little disclaimer, the sound is not perfect because I was in a hotel room and I was trying to clean up the sound. So as a result, some of the words, like you kind of don't hear like the end piece of some of them. It's really pretty mild. It's not too bad. And you know, we don't wait for things to be perfect around here. We just do it. So I had something I wanted to talk to you guys about. I was fresh from my presentation at reset and I wanted to just kind of come on and chat with you guys. And so I debated on whether or not I should release it just because like the sound is not as you know high quality as it normally is. But I'm doing it anyway. And so I want you to also use this as an example if you need to, to just put something out into the world that might not be exactly perfect or exactly how you would like it to be. Because the message is there, okay? And it's going to hit the right people. So if that's you and this resonates with you, hit me up on Instagram after you listen or watch and let me know. And I hope you guys enjoy today's episode. Welcome to Tried and True with the Dash of Woo, where we blend rock solid tips with a little bit of magic. I'm Renee Bowen, your host, life and business coach, and professional photographer. At your service, we are all about getting creative, diving into your business, and playing with manifestation over here. So are you ready to get inspired and have some fun? Let's dive in. Hey, hey, welcome back to Tried and True with a Dash of Woo. I'm your host, Renee Bowen. And yes, I am coming to you from a hotel room in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I have been at a conference this week. I was speaking at Reset Conference, and I'm actually not quite done. I have a styled shoot this afternoon with two high school seniors, so I'll be leading that. And then I'm headed back home tomorrow. I've actually been here since last Thursday. I flew in and met some of my Elevate members. Elevate is my sort of like a mix between a mastermind and a membership. It's a little bit more than a membership, not as intensive or expensive as a mastermind. And it was so great to spend time with a few of those women in my group. We had an Airbnb right on the Tennessee River, which was really, really beautiful and super relaxing. And then I came straight to Reset, which was not too far because we were staying in Chattanooga. And so I've been at the Reed House Hotel in Chattanooga, which is a beautiful, beautiful property. And I had never been to Chattanooga. So this was like a really cool experience. And I'm excited to shoot here this afternoon. I always love shooting in a new city. So I wanted to just do a quick episode from the hotel room while I had a few minutes to process the stuff that I've kind of been doing here this week. I had so many great conversations with so many photographers from all over the country. I got to meet a lot of new people, which is super exciting. So if you guys are listening, if you were at presentation and you followed the podcast and you're listening, hello. First of all, thank you for coming to the presentation. I'd love to hear what you thought. I presented on the clarity method, which is sort of like my signature methodology for rewiring and digging deep into your programming so that you can create magnetic messaging based on your identity and how you want your business to look and feel. That's the most important part. How you want it to feel. Because if it doesn't feel like you, and if it doesn't feel good, you're not going to do it. So if you were in the room with me this weekend, this is your little follow-up nud. And if you weren't, you're still exactly where you need to be. And I appreciate you for being here as always. Because what I talked about in that presentation here at Reset is something that I see over and over again with photographers and creatives, entrepreneurs in general. You kind of think you have a marketing problem. You feel stuck, you're spinning your wheels, you're in your head. And maybe you think you're not posting enough or you're not showing up consistently. You think the algorithm is against you. You think that you just need better hooks or different strategies, or you start looking at other photographers and wondering why do they seem to have it together? Why do they seem to be booked out a year in advance? First of all, you do not know what is going on under the hood of that photographer's business. So this is something that I heard a lot this weekend from a few photographers looking around, going, you know, so-and-so's booked out a long time in advance. First of all, you don't know what that photographer's pricing is like. You don't know how they run their systems. You don't know if they're actually running on empty and running on burnout. You don't know if they even need to do this work. Meaning, do they have a safety net? Do they have a spouse that takes care of everything? And this is just their side gig money. You don't know any of those pieces until you start digging into somebody's business. And I gotta tell you, when I first started, it was even harder because we didn't really even have the support that we have now. We didn't have free education. Um, YouTube wasn't even really a thing yet when I started my business a long, long time ago. So, in one way, I think it was really good because I didn't have all of this comparison. Um, but on the other side of it, I also really had no idea. And I had to just kind of wing it and figure it out for myself. So, all that to say, please don't compare yourself. If you were here this week and you're feeling some sort of way about, you know, the things that you learned. Maybe you're overwhelmed, maybe you feel like, oh my God, I'm not doing enough, or you're comparing yourself. I want you to stop doing that because A, it's not productive. It's not gonna get you anywhere. And B, you really don't know what's going on under the hood of that photographer's business until you start digging around. And trust me, I have seen the inside of a lot of photography businesses. And not everything is as it seems. Most of the time, there's a whole lot more to the story. And for me specifically, I do need to work, right? I could not rely on a spouse to just make sure everything was taken care of. I actually needed this business to work and to be profitable and to be sustainable. So if you're dealing with any of that stuff, it's most likely a clarity issue. And I'm not talking about like surface level clarity. Like what I'm talking about is who are you actually being in your business? Because your messaging is never going to outperform your identity. And that's kind of where it gets a little uncomfortable because most people don't really want to look at that, right? It's much easier to tweak caption or to think that it's a different kind of strategy or to compare yourself. You know, why am I playing small? Why am I still watering this down? So that's why I created the clearing method. And that's what I kind of wanted to just talk to you guys about here today a little bit more too. It's not about doing more. In most cases, when people come to me, they think that they really do need to add some more things to the mix, but really it's it's not additive. We need to think about what we're gonna take out, what we're gonna pull out first, so that you can create some room and space in your life and your business and in your nervous system. So let's zoom out for a second. Most of you guys are building your businesses from an emotional baseline you've never really dug into or questioned. Maybe there's doubt, comparison, scarcity. I don't know if I'm good enough. But the wild part is that, again, that is not just a mindset thing. And that word gets thrown around a lot, right? This is a neurological thing. Your brain and your body are wired to repeat what is familiar. Your brain and your body are wired for safety. And so if you've spent years feeling really uncertain, your body really memorizes that. And now you're trying to create confident magnetic messaging from an identity that still feels unsure. There's not a solid foundation. That's why it feels hard, forced, it doesn't stick because clarity is not a strategy, it's a state. And if your state off, your messaging will always be off. So inside the clarity method, I walk people through a few different pieces, but I want to give you like a really simple way to look at this today. Okay. There's three things that create magnetic messaging: your identity, your energy, and language. Most creatives start with language. What should I say? What should I post? Give me a caption, typing it into your AI, right? But language is last because if your identity is unclear and your energy is inconsistent, your words are not going to hit. So if your internal identity is, I'm still figuring it out, I'm not as good as them, I hope this works, then your messaging is going to sound like, hey guys, I have a few thoughts open. Let me know if you're interested. I'm offering sessions again this year. There's like a scarcity behind that. Okay. It's vague and it's kind of forgettable. But when you shift your identity, even slightly, everything changes. First your energy shifts, and then everything else follows. So now you're not just somebody who takes photos. You're someone who sees people. You're someone who captures a moment in their life they can't ever get back. You're someone who helps them step into who they are becoming. And you can really feel the difference between those two messages, right? Same camera, same skill set, completely different energy. So here's what I want you to do. And if you were in the room this week with me, you already started this because you have a whole workbook that I gave you guys. P.S. If you weren't in the room with me this week and you want to hear what I had to say and you want to watch the presentation, I do have a recording of all of it. I'll send it to you along with the workbook. The link for that is in the show notes if you're interested. Okay, so here's what I want you guys to do today as you listen to this podcast, though. I want you to think about not what you shoot. I don't even want you to think about your target client necessarily just yet. That is part of the process. But what I really want you to focus on right now is the transformation. What kind of transformation do you provide for your clients? How do they feel when they leave your session or whatever you do for them if you're not a photographer? How do you make them feel? And more importantly, how do you feel running your business? Does it feel spacious? Does it feel like freedom? Because you probably created the business so that you could have freedom in your life. For me, it was because I really wanted to be there to raise my kids. I had a special needs son who really needed a lot of therapy. And I wanted to be there for my kids. I wanted to go to the ETA meetings. I wanted to be there for them when, you know, they needed help with their homework. I didn't want to be at a nine and five all day. So I created the business for freedom. And then within a couple of years, I found myself completely chained to the business. And I didn't have freedom. And I did just try and push through for a lot of it. I did, you know, do it scared and, you know, dug into the mind that work. But that's not what helps me craft resin messaging, right? It got me through the beginning parts of my business. And I think that that is a really great gateway. But once you sort of get in there and you're still feeling stuck, then there's something else going on. Okay. And this is all tied to programming. And all of us have programming because by the time that we reach, you know, midlife, we're sort of running on autopilot. Unless you are actively challenging yourself daily to change your thoughts, you probably are just kind of thinking the same things over and over and over again by default. That's just the way our brains are wired. We're literally built for repetition for safety. And then your unconscious mind starts to believe that whatever you're doing, because you've been doing it for so long, is your baseline of safety. So when you try and start doing things that are different or new, it's really scary. And your unconscious mind starts firing up and telling you you're not good enough. And you start hearing all of those sabotaging voices in your head. Okay. Those are not true, first of all. And it's not your intuition. That's just your unconscious mind trying to keep you safe. Because if you're just trying to make those go away and not deal with them, they're going to keep coming back. Your brain is always looking for evidence to support who you think you are. So if you keep identifying as the photographer who's stuck or struggling, you're going to keep finding proof of that. If you keep telling yourself that no one will pay your prices, you're going to keep finding proof of that. This is a neurological thing. It's literally because it's how we're wired. If you're in my class, you know that's because of the particular activating system in your brain. But if you start identifying as someone who is fully booked, in demand, trusted, your behavior changes, your language changes, your energy changes. And people really feel that. And that's when things really start to click, but not because you hack the algorithm, because your message finally matches who you really are. And let me just mention to you that if you started a business a really long time ago, there's a really good chance your identity is not matched up with who you are now going into this next phase of your business. Okay. I started my business when my kids were really little. I had to reevaluate all of this every kind of step of the way and make sure I was still aligned with my original messaging. And spoiler alert, like by 10 years in, I wasn't. So it's really important to reevaluate where you are now. Make sure it's still aligned. You know, my kids are all grown now. I have completely different goals for the next five to 10 years of my life than I did 10, 15 years ago. So if you're sitting here thinking, okay, I get it, but I still feel sacred. I mean, I think that's probably a good sign, first of all, you're aware of it. Awareness is always the first piece. And now the question becomes are you gonna keep tweaking your marketing? Are you gonna keep trying to slap some strategy on it? Or are you gonna finally dig in? Are you finally ready to look at the identity underneath all of this? Because that's the real work. I think it's actually really exciting. Yes, it's uncomfortable, but that's a good sign. Because growth never happens in comfort. Because I truly believe that life is just really about the experience. Why would we want to stay comfortable? Truly. Think about that for a second. We come here to learn, to grow. And if we're triggered and we're uncomfortable, that's a good sign. And if it's something you want help with, that is literally what I do. Whether it's inside of my coaching programs or through the tools I've created for you to help you translate this into actual content. You don't have to figure it out alone. Side note, if you are a senior photographer, I just completed a six-week marketing program where we went deep into all of this. And I am working on putting that inside of a course. So if you want information on that, just hit me up. Let me know if you're interested in it. I am working on getting that live pretty soon. So that'll be something that I offer as well. The point is that you don't have to figure it out alone. But for now, start here. Okay. Who are you being? And does your message actually reflect that? Because when those two things line up, you stop being the best kept secret and you start becoming the obvious choice. So keep showing up with curiosity and courage, because that version of you who has everything that she wants that already exists. You just gotta tap into her energy. So if you guys were here at Reset this week and we didn't connect, please come say hi over on Insta. I'd love to meet you there. Um, there were so many people that I didn't have a chance to actually connect with. And I hope you really enjoyed just the entire experience. It was a really, really fun week. Okay, hopefully you guys really enjoyed that. The links to everything that I mentioned are in the show notes, including my entire presentation from reset. Now, just so you know, this is a video of me presenting the content. You can't see my slides. However, with that link that you sign up to get the presentation, I'm also gonna send you the transcription and I'm also going to send you the workbook, and I'm also gonna send you the slides. So you still can get a little bit of what the people got in that room. And you can definitely still do the work in that workbook. Okay. So I would love to hear from you whether you were there or not and you did it after. I would love to hear whether or not that was useful, valuable, because again, like I put this stuff out and it's really hard to know sometimes like if it's even like something you guys want or anything like that. So I really do rely on your feedback just in general from the show and everything that I do. But specifically for this, I would love to know if you guys liked that. Um, I feel like I wanted to kind of give you guys a little piece of what it was like to be in the room. Reset is really fun, just as a side note, if you haven't signed up, they are almost full already. They sold almost all of the tickets, like from just the people who were in the room already, because they're going back to Panama City and that location is really amazing and people really love it. And this is a pretty awesome community. So if you are thinking about going to reset, you really should go ahead and grab a ticket now because they'll probably sell out. Um, so anyway, I hope you guys have a great rest of your week. I would love to hear from you. I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do because being gone, you know, it's just like a lot. And then when I got back, I was like really, really exhausted for a good three days. I think my nervous system was just like on high, basically, you know, for an entire week. And then getting back back home, I just I needed to rest. And so I feel pretty awesome now, I have to tell you. And also, I did get my senior marketing course up for you guys. So the link for that is below. The feedback that I've gotten on this is pretty amazing. So you really don't want to miss out on this. It's a really robust course, and you can also upgrade to a little VIP option if you want to have some input from me. It's not like one-on-one coaching is not as intensive or high of an investment, but it does come with a touch point Zoom call with me so that we can really integrate everything that you learned in that program. And I really feel like, honestly, this is probably one of the best things that I've ever created. So I'm excited about it. Let me know what you guys think. I'll talk to you soon. Have a great rest of your week. Love ya. Bye.
